La Turbie

This medieval village is famous for its monumental ‘Trophée d’Auguste’; it is nestled above the Principality of Monaco, between Nice and Menton. This charming village has everything to captivate you: panoramic views, a rich historical heritage, numerous hiking trails and the Grande Corniche Nature Park.

From the 11th century onwards, the Trophée was converted into a fortress, and the village and its inhabitants found themselves at the centre of the conflicts taking place in the region. The fortress of La Turbie was finally mined on the orders of Louis XIV in 1705, and the Trophée was largely destroyed. La Turbie was definitively annexed to France in 1860. At the end of the 19th century, the people of La Turbie welcomed the first tourists of the ‘Belle Époque’, and several famous figures stayed in the village. It was in 1904, and then in 1908, that two of La Turbie’s districts gained their independence, and the new towns of Beausoleil and Cap d’Ail were established.

Le Trophée, having been listed as a Historic Monument in 1865, was finally restored from 1909 onwards. The village, liberated on 2 September 1944, began to revive and undertook major changes that transformed it and gave it the charm and authenticity for which it is recognised today.
